No matter how carefully we bag up our household rubbish, somehow fluid and bad odours leak out of bin bags, causing nasty smells in our beloved wheelie bins.
No amount of powders or sprays will work 100% effectively at eliminating bad odours, if the source of the odour has not been removed.
Step 1
The only way to remove bad odours effectively is to clean the bin with either a disinfectant or a jet wash if you have one. If the build up of old rubbish and stinky gooey substance is now unidentifiable, it is time to get the wheelie bin cleaned.
If this is too disgusting a job for you to even think about, call or email your local wheelie bin cleaning company. They are usually advertised in the Yellow Pages, Thompson Local or just do a Google search.
Most wheelie bin companies advertise a weekly cleaning service. However, many of them are happy to provide a one off clean, for a one off charge. Expect to pay about 10 for someone else to do the dirty job for you. They will arrive in a cleaning van, equipped with a jet wash machine, rain coat and wellington boots.
You don't have to be home when the clean takes place. Just put the wheelie bin out on the day agreed day of cleaning, and when you get home it will be fresh, clean, gunge and odour free....probably for the first time in years!
Step 2
Now that the unidentified gunge has been removed, the maintenance stage begins.
Unfortunately, no matter how careful we have been to avoid the build up of bad odours, they will still occur as the warm weather arrives.
The best solution is to use a non-toxic odour neutralising spray that is designed to work in a closed environment. You also want to choose a product that is biodegradable, environmentally friendly, pet safe and safe for the kids.
Simply spray the bin after clean up, all sides, top, bottom and the inside of the lid.
Step 3
Insert a wheelie bin size black bin liner into your newly cleaned wheelie bin. This liner bag will hold leaks from the household bin bags you will be filling it with later. This will help reduce the build up of unidentified gunge and bad odours in the coming months
When adding bags of household rubbish, spray the bags lightly with yournon-toxic odour neutralising spray to prevent and maintain fresh, clean wheelie bin.
